Art as a social intervention in Aboriginal Health Program
La Perouse Parents Program The Parents Program uses art as a social intervention practice in the La Perouse community to promote the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal teenage parents.
Art sessions provide opportunities to incorporate positive messages and provide encouragement to young Aboriginal parents to continue or return to educational/vocational training.
The program aims to
- engage young parents to continue or return to educational or vocational training
- organise flexible high school/ TAFE classes in the community
- create flexible and innovative opportunities for learning and self development
- share information and knowldege about available services
- deliver innovative art making workshops to promote self awareness and confidence
- offer parenting skills, training courses and access to health care for their children and themselves
- access transport and childcare to facilitate active participation in all program
