Juvenile Justice & Youth at Risk Cultivator Group

Juvenile Justice & Youth at Risk

The focus of the Juvenile Justice Cultivator Group is to network, promote and support artists and artsworkers working with young detainees in Juvenile Justice Detention centres. These workers may include art teachers employed by the Department of Education and Training (DET) and artists directly employed by The Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Currently there is no communication network that regularly brings this sector together. CCDNSW Juvenile Justice Cultivator aims to deliver such a communication network.

Community Cultural Development describes a process in which artists work with communities to develop the communities’ capacity through cultural and artistic expression. By working together and using the arts as tools for exploring and resolving community issues we can build stronger communities and stronger cultures.

Those art workers and artists who work with young detainees in Juvenile Justice Detention centres and who use community cultural development models, have an important role in exploring the issues that impact on this group.

Working in partnership with DET and DJJ, CCDNSW wishes to build a strong support base for our CCD artists, cultural workers and organizations and with your help we hope to design a programme that will establish an active and meaningful network.

The CCDNSW Juvenile Justice Cultivator  is a statewide programme that aims to:

•    Identify the cultural workers employed by DET who work in the education units at each JJ detention centre.

•    Make contact with the identified cultural workers

•    Survey the cultural workers with regard to their work practices and environment, perceived needs and perceived obstacles to development.

•    Support opportunities for collaboration and professional development for the cultural workers, teachers and artists working in these environments.

•    Develop resources to navigate and action art projects and programs emerging from this context of practice.

•    Facilitate a face-to-face discussion with cultural workers and relevant bodies (DET, Juvenile Justice) focusing on the value of CCD practice within the educational and recreational environments at each Juvenile Justice Centre in NSW

•    Establish and promote active networks that connect artists and cultural workers.
